Is it that his uniform is completely devoid of insignia? That's interesting. I wonder if there's something else more obvious that I'm missing.

I had not noticed that before, but yes, no insignia of anykind whatsoever. He was in a Signal Corps. Unit that did not exist, apparently.
He really was issued a cyanide capsule. Pop said he threw it away at the first opportunity because he knew he would probably use it if captured!
